The so-called “dog days of summer” are coming to an end, and many are making their back-to-school preparations. During this time of year, families are often scrambling to get supplies, make last-minute plans, and head back to the classroom. Your dog might be enjoying the flurry of activity now, but the house is going to feel silent once everyone is at work and school. Dogs love routine and predictability, and a big change like this can trigger stress, anxiety, and even problem behaviors. Here’s what you need to know to make the transition a smooth one.
Busy Dogs Are Happy Dogs
Those first days your family is back in a school time routine, your dog might find themselves at loose ends for fun. They might even create their own fun, which isn’t necessarily your idea of fun. Don’t leave them to their own devices: Leave them with plenty of fun activities to keep them occupied.
Hollow fillable toys are a great option. Fill them with peanut butter, wet dog food, frozen smashed bananas with blueberries, canned pumpkin, or yogurt. If time is a concern, premake your Kongs as you meal prep, and freeze them until you need them. Hiding treats around the house is also a great way to occupy your pup in your absence. Snuffle mats and lickable mats can be incorporated in much the same way.
Take It Slow
As mentioned, dogs are creatures of routine. An abrupt change to the routine can be stressful. Instead, ease into your new schedule by getting up a bit earlier and planning early walks. You can also start offering some of the new interactive toys and activities you’ll be leaving your dog with during the school year. Once your dog is busy, you can occupy yourself elsewhere. The idea is to leave your pup to amuse themselves with an appropriate activity.
Plan Ahead
During the summer, your dog likely has lots of opportunities for potty time. Once your family enters the school routine, however, bathroom breaks might be few and far between. Be sure to plan longer walks in the morning to get everything out and a quick potty break just before you leave for the day. The first person to return home in the afternoon should also plan for a walk or potty break. If your pup can’t hold it the entire time you’re planning to be out, consider hiring a dog walker or pet sitter. You can also opt for doggie daycare, which can not just keep your pup’s potty schedule on track but also ensure your dog is busy and happy. Build Your Bond
At the end of the day, all your dog really wants is you. Carve out some time on your days off to spend with your pup. That one-on-one time is essential for a healthy bond. You don’t have to plan big outings or adventures. A field trip to a favorite pet-friendly store or an afternoon of frisbee in the park might be just what you both need to build your bond. If your dog is a bit more high-energy, consider trying some new games, like hide-and-seek, or training new skills, like barn hunting or scent work.
